Rotten Egg Smell
From Your Well Water?

Hydrogen sulfide in well water is a solvable problem — but only if you identify the source first. We diagnose whether it's dissolved H₂S, sulfur bacteria, or a corroding anode rod, then apply the correct fix. Serving Calvert, Anne Arundel & Charles County.

Three Sources of Sulfur Smell — Three Different Fixes

The most common mistake homeowners make is buying a sulfur filter without knowing which type of sulfur problem they have. The wrong treatment wastes money and may not work. We test first.

01

Dissolved Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S)

How to tell

Both hot and cold water smell. Smell is present immediately when water runs.

The fix

Air injection iron/sulfur filter or aeration system. Oxidizes dissolved H₂S and filters it out. Most effective for concentrations under 5 ppm.

Common in: Chesapeake Beach, North Beach, parts of Calvert County near the Bay

02

Sulfur-Reducing Bacteria

How to tell

Smell may be intermittent. May notice slime in toilet tank. Smell can be worse after periods of no use.

The fix

Shock chlorination of the well, followed by continuous disinfection — chlorine injection system or UV disinfection. Bacteria must be eliminated, not just filtered.

Common in: All areas — bacteria can colonize any well system

03

Magnesium Anode Rod (Water Heater)

How to tell

Only hot water smells. Cold water is fine. Smell is strongest from hot water heater.

The fix

Replace the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc rod. Smell typically disappears within a few days. Simple fix — often done same day.

Common in: All areas — any home with a tank water heater

Don't Buy a Filter Before You Test

A sulfur filter will not kill sulfur bacteria. A UV system will not remove dissolved hydrogen sulfide. An anode rod replacement will not help if the problem is in the well. The wrong treatment is money wasted. We test your water on-site — iron, sulfur, bacteria, pH, hardness — and tell you exactly what you're dealing with before recommending anything.

Sulfur Treatment Systems We Install

Air Injection Iron/Sulfur Filter

Best for: Dissolved H₂S under 5 ppm, often combined with iron

Injects air into the water to oxidize dissolved hydrogen sulfide and iron, then filters out the oxidized particles. Single tank handles both iron and sulfur. Requires no chemicals.

Brands we use

Clack, Fleck, Pentair

Aeration System

Best for: Higher H₂S concentrations, or when air injection alone is insufficient

Sprays water through an aeration chamber to off-gas hydrogen sulfide before it enters the treatment system. Very effective for high-sulfur water.

Brands we use

Custom-designed for each installation

Chlorine Injection System

Best for: Sulfur bacteria, iron bacteria, or combined bacterial/chemical sulfur problems

Injects a measured dose of chlorine solution into the water line ahead of a contact tank and carbon filter. Kills bacteria and oxidizes sulfur and iron. Requires periodic chlorine refill.

Brands we use

Stenner, ProMinent

UV Disinfection

Best for: Bacteria disinfection without chemicals — often used after an iron/sulfur filter

UV light kills bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms without adding chemicals to the water. Does not remove dissolved sulfur — must be used in combination with a filter for chemical sulfur.

Brands we use

Viqua, Trojan UV

Anode Rod Replacement

Best for: Hot water only smells like sulfur — water heater anode rod is the source

Replace the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc combination rod. The aluminum/zinc rod does not react with sulfur in the water. Smell typically disappears within 2–3 days.

Brands we use

Rheem, Camco, Corro-Protec

Sulfur Smell in Southern Maryland Well Water

Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most common water quality complaints we receive from Calvert County and Anne Arundel County homeowners. Here's what we typically find in each area:

Chesapeake Beach & North Beach

Homes near the Bay frequently have dissolved hydrogen sulfide in the groundwater — a natural result of organic matter decomposition in the aquifer. Both hot and cold water smell. An air injection iron/sulfur filter is typically the right solution, often combined with iron treatment since iron and sulfur frequently occur together in this area.

Calvert County (Dunkirk, Owings, Prince Frederick, Huntingtown)

Sulfur smell in Calvert County is most often associated with sulfur-reducing bacteria in the well or water system, particularly in older wells. We see this frequently in homes where the well has not been shock-chlorinated in 10+ years. Shock chlorination followed by a UV system or chlorine injection is the standard treatment.

Anne Arundel County (Davidsonville, Edgewater, Lothian)

Anne Arundel County well water is often acidic (pH 5.8–6.5), which increases the solubility of hydrogen sulfide. Acidic water holds more dissolved H₂S. Treatment requires addressing both the pH (acid neutralizer) and the sulfur (air injection or aeration). Treating sulfur without correcting the pH produces poor results.

All Areas — Water Heater Anode Rod

The most common call we receive about sulfur smell is actually a water heater issue, not a well water issue. If only your hot water smells, the magnesium anode rod in your water heater is reacting with sulfur in the water. This is a simple fix — anode rod replacement — that we can typically complete same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?
The rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. In well water, it comes from three sources: naturally occurring H₂S dissolved in the groundwater, sulfur-reducing bacteria in the well or water system, or a corroding magnesium anode rod in your water heater. Each source requires a different fix — we diagnose the source before recommending treatment.
Why does only my hot water smell like sulfur?
If only your hot water smells like sulfur, the source is almost certainly the magnesium anode rod in your water heater. The anode rod reacts with sulfur in the water to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. Replacing the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc rod typically eliminates the smell within a few days.
Is sulfur smell in water dangerous?
At the concentrations typically found in residential well water, hydrogen sulfide is not a health hazard — it is a nuisance. However, sulfur bacteria can indicate other water quality issues, and high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide can be corrosive to plumbing. We recommend testing and treating sulfur odor regardless.
How much does sulfur treatment cost?
An anode rod replacement is typically $150–$300. An air injection iron/sulfur filter runs $1,500–$2,500 installed. A chlorine injection system with contact tank and carbon filter runs $2,500–$4,000 installed. We test your water first and give you a written estimate before any work begins.
Can I shock chlorinate my own well?
Yes — shock chlorination is something homeowners can do themselves. We can walk you through the process. However, if the sulfur smell returns within a few months, you likely have an ongoing bacteria problem that requires a permanent disinfection system.

"We had a mystery leak in our bathroom and everyone who saw it was convinced it was coming from inside the wall. He came out, checked everything, and was super thorough instead of just guessing. Turns out it was actually a leak from the toilet tank that was dripping in a way that made it look like it was coming from the opposite wall. He was super patient with all of our questions and explained the fix. We really appreciated his professionalism and transparency. Having an older home, it can be stressful not knowing what kind of repair you're walking into. I highly recommend him if you want someone trustworthy and knowledgeable who genuinely just wants to help."

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
