The type of pipe in your sewer line determines how it fails and what the repair options are. Many Southern Maryland homes still have original sewer pipe from the 1950s–1970s.
Orangeburg Pipe
1940s–1970sMade from compressed wood pulp and pitch, Orangeburg pipe was widely used in post-WWII construction. It absorbs moisture, softens, and collapses over time. If your home was built between 1945 and 1972, there is a high probability your sewer line is Orangeburg. It cannot be repaired — it must be replaced.
Cast Iron
1900s–1980sCast iron sewer pipe is extremely durable but corrodes from the inside over decades. Hydrogen sulfide gas produced by sewage reacts with moisture to form sulfuric acid, which eats the pipe from the inside out. Older cast iron lines develop scale buildup, cracks, and eventually collapse.
Clay Tile
1900s–1960sVitrified clay tile was the standard sewer pipe before plastic. It is brittle, prone to root intrusion at joints, and susceptible to cracking from soil movement. Clay tile sewer lines in Southern Maryland are frequently found with severe root intrusion and offset joints.
PVC / ABS
1970s–presentModern plastic pipe is the current standard. PVC and ABS are resistant to corrosion and root intrusion at joints, but can still develop bellies from soil settlement, joint separations from ground movement, and root intrusion at any crack or improperly glued joint.

Spot Repair vs. Full Replacement
Hydro Jetting
High-pressure water scours the pipe walls clean — removing grease, sludge, and root tendrils. Best for structurally sound pipes with buildup or minor root intrusion. Does not fix structural damage.

Spot Repair
Targeted excavation and replacement of a single damaged section — typically 4–10 feet. Appropriate when the rest of the line is in good condition and only one section is damaged.

Full Replacement
Complete replacement of the sewer line from the house to the street or septic connection. Required when the pipe is severely deteriorated, has multiple problems, or is Orangeburg pipe.

How do I know if I need sewer repair or just a cleaning?
A camera inspection tells you definitively. If the pipe is structurally sound and the blockage is grease, roots, or debris, cleaning (hydro jetting) may be sufficient. If the pipe has a belly, collapse, offset joint, or severe root damage, repair or replacement is needed. Snaking a structurally damaged pipe just clears it temporarily — the problem returns.
What is the difference between spot repair and full replacement?
Spot repair addresses a single damaged section — typically 4–10 feet of pipe. It requires targeted excavation at the problem location. Full replacement replaces the entire sewer line from the house to the street or septic connection. Camera inspection determines which is appropriate based on the condition of the entire line.
Do you offer trenchless sewer repair?
We evaluate trenchless options on a case-by-case basis. Trenchless methods (pipe lining, pipe bursting) are appropriate for certain pipe conditions and configurations. A spot repair typically takes one day. Full sewer line replacement typically takes one to two days depending on depth, length, and access. We restore the excavation area and compact the backfill before leaving.

Can tree roots grow back after sewer repair?

If root intrusion is recurring, pipe repair or replacement is the permanent solution.

Orangeburg pipe deteriorates over time — it absorbs moisture, deforms, and eventually collapses. There is no repair for Orangeburg pipe; it must be replaced. Camera inspection will identify Orangeburg pipe immediately.
What causes a sewer line to collapse?
Sewer line collapse is most commonly caused by: deteriorated Orangeburg pipe that has deformed and collapsed; severely corroded cast iron pipe; root intrusion that has cracked and displaced pipe sections; soil settlement or shifting that has broken pipe joints; and ground movement from nearby construction or tree removal. Do you handle sewer repair permits in Maryland?

What is a pipe belly and can it be repaired?
A pipe belly is a section of sewer pipe that has sagged below the normal slope, creating a low spot where waste and debris accumulate. Bellies are caused by soil settlement, improper installation, or ground movement. A minor belly can sometimes be managed with regular hydro jetting, but a significant belly requires excavation and pipe repair to restore proper slope. Camera inspection identifies belly location and severity.
How do I know if my sewer line is failing?
Warning signs include: multiple slow drains throughout the house (not just one fixture); sewage odor inside the home or in the yard; wet spots or unusually green patches in the yard over the sewer line; gurgling sounds from toilets when other fixtures drain; sewage backing up into the lowest fixtures (floor drains, basement toilets).
