Whole Home Repiping

Whole-home repiping is one of the most significant plumbing investments a homeowner can make — and in Southern Maryland, it is often needed sooner than homeowners expect. The reason is the water itself.

Well water in Calvert County and Anne Arundel County is frequently slightly acidic, with pH values ranging from 5.8 to 6.8. Copper pipe is vulnerable to acidic water — the acid slowly dissolves the copper from the inside of the pipe, thinning the walls over time until pinhole leaks develop. A home with pH 6.0 well water may develop its first pinhole leak in 12–15 years; a home with pH 5.8 water may see leaks in 8–10 years. Once the first pinhole appears, others typically follow within months or years, because the entire system has been exposed to the same corrosive water for the same amount of time.

Galvanized steel pipe — common in homes built before 1970 — corrodes from the inside out, gradually reducing the pipe's interior diameter and flow capacity. The rust-colored water and low pressure that galvanized pipe homeowners experience are symptoms of a pipe that is nearing the end of its service life. Unlike copper, galvanized pipe cannot be repaired — it must be replaced.

PEX pipe is the solution for both problems. It is completely inert to acidic water — it will not corrode regardless of pH. It is also significantly more flexible than copper, which means it can be routed through walls and ceilings with fewer access holes and less drywall damage. And it is freeze-resistant — an important consideration for homes in Southern Maryland that experience occasional hard freezes.
