What Hydro Jetting Removes
Grease & FOG
Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) accumulate on pipe walls over years, narrowing the pipe until flow stops. Hydro jetting emulsifies and flushes grease completely — the only method that actually removes it from the pipe walls.
Root Tendrils
Fine root tendrils that have entered the pipe through cracks or joints are scoured away by the high-pressure stream. Note: if roots have caused structural damage, pipe repair is also needed.
Sludge & Biofilm
Organic sludge and biofilm build up on pipe walls over time, creating a surface that attracts more debris. Hydro jetting removes the biofilm layer and restores the smooth pipe surface.
Mineral Scale
Hard water deposits (calcium carbonate scale) build up inside pipes over years, particularly in water heater supply lines and older galvanized pipes. High-pressure jetting breaks up and flushes scale deposits.
Debris & Sediment
Sand, grit, and debris that accumulate in low spots (pipe bellies) are flushed out by the jetting stream. Note: if a belly is causing the accumulation, the belly itself requires pipe repair.
Wipes & Soft Blockages
"Flushable" wipes, paper towels, and other soft materials that have accumulated in the line are broken up and flushed by the high-pressure stream.

Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure water stream — typically 3,000 to 4,000 PSI — delivered through a specialized nozzle to scour the interior walls of a drain or sewer pipe. Unlike snaking, which punches a hole through a blockage, hydro jetting removes the entire blockage and cleans the pipe walls, restoring full flow capacity.
Is hydro jetting safe for all pipes?
Hydro jetting is safe for most modern PVC and ABS pipes. For older cast iron, clay tile, or deteriorated pipes, we always perform a camera inspection first to assess pipe condition before jetting. Jetting a severely deteriorated pipe can cause damage — which is why camera inspection before jetting is standard practice at Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland.
How is hydro jetting different from snaking?
Snaking (drain augering) uses a rotating metal cable to punch through or break up a blockage. It clears a path but leaves debris and buildup on the pipe walls. Hydro jetting scours the entire pipe interior clean — removing grease, sludge, scale, and root tendrils from the walls. Hydro jetting provides a more thorough and longer-lasting result.
How often should drains be hydro jetted?
For residential drains with no history of problems, hydro jetting every 3–5 years as preventative maintenance is typical. For homes with recurring grease buildup (kitchen drains), root intrusion, or older pipes, annual jetting may be appropriate. Commercial kitchens typically require quarterly or semi-annual jetting.
Does hydro jetting remove tree roots?
Hydro jetting removes root tendrils and small root masses from inside the pipe. However, if roots have caused structural damage to the pipe — cracks, offset joints, or collapse — jetting clears the roots but does not repair the structural damage. Will hydro jetting fix a slow drain permanently?
Hydro jetting provides a much more durable result than snaking for grease-related slow drains — typically lasting 2–5 years before maintenance is needed again. For root intrusion in a structurally sound pipe, jetting clears the roots but they will regrow over 1–3 years. The only permanent solution for recurring root intrusion is pipe repair or replacement.

We use up to 4,000 PSI for main sewer lines and stubborn blockages. For smaller drain lines (2–3 inch kitchen and bathroom drains), we use lower pressure settings — typically 1,500–2,500 PSI — to match the pipe size and condition. Pressure is always calibrated to the pipe being cleaned.
Should I get a camera inspection before or after hydro jetting?
Ideally both. A pre-jetting camera inspection tells us exactly what is in the pipe and whether the pipe is safe to jet. A post-jetting camera confirms the pipe is clean and identifies any structural issues that jetting revealed.
