What Requires Sewer Excavation
Not every sewer problem requires excavation — but some do. Camera inspection determines which category your problem falls into.
Collapsed Sewer Line
A fully or partially collapsed pipe cannot be cleared or repaired without excavation. The camera locates the exact collapse point so we dig only where needed.
Orangeburg Pipe Replacement
Orangeburg pipe cannot be repaired — it must be replaced. Full excavation and replacement with new PVC is the only permanent solution.
Severe Root Damage
When root intrusion has caused structural damage to the pipe — cracks, offset joints, or pipe wall destruction — the damaged section must be excavated and replaced.
Pipe Belly (Sag)
A belly is a low spot caused by soil settlement. The only way to correct a belly is to excavate, re-grade the pipe bed, and reinstall the pipe at the correct slope.
Offset Joints
Severely offset pipe joints that have separated or created a significant obstruction require excavation to realign or replace the affected section.
Main Water Line Repair

What to Expect on Excavation Day
Miss Utility Call (Maryland 811)
Before any excavation, we call Maryland 811 to have all underground utilities marked. This is required by law and protects against hitting gas, electric, water, and communication lines.
Surface Protection
We protect driveways, walkways, and landscaping from equipment damage. Excavation is targeted to the marked location only.
Excavation & Pipe Access
We excavate to the pipe depth, expose the damaged section, and assess the full extent of the damage. If the damage is more extensive than the camera indicated, we discuss options with you before proceeding.
Pipe Repair or Replacement
The damaged section is cut out and replaced with new schedule 40 PVC pipe, properly bedded in sand and backfilled with compacted fill material.
Post-Repair Camera Verification
After the repair, we run the camera again to confirm the repair is correct, the pipe is properly sloped, and there are no additional problems in the line.
Backfill & Restoration
The excavation is backfilled with compacted fill material and the surface is restored to grade. We leave the site clean and stable.

Do you restore the excavation area after the repair?
Yes. After the pipe repair or replacement is complete, we backfill the excavation with compacted fill material, restore the surface grade, and compact the backfill. We leave the excavation area in a stable, restored condition. Landscaping restoration (sod, plants, concrete, asphalt) is discussed and quoted separately as needed.
