Unusually green or lush patches in the yard

A leaking sewer line fertilizes the soil above it. If you notice an area of your yard that's greener or growing faster than the surrounding grass, it may be directly above a damaged sewer line.

Sinkholes or soft spots in the yard

A broken sewer line can erode the soil around it, creating voids that eventually collapse. Soft spots, depressions, or sinkholes in the yard near the sewer line path are serious warning signs.

Sewage backup in floor drains

Floor drains backing up — especially in basements and utility rooms — is a classic sign of a main line blockage or damage.

Rodent or insect activity

Rats and certain insects can enter homes through cracked sewer lines. Unexplained rodent activity can sometimes be traced to a sewer line breach.
