Sewer Line Camera Inspection: What It Is & When You Need One
A sewer camera inspection is the single most important diagnostic tool in modern plumbing. It lets us see exactly what's inside your sewer line — without digging, without guessing, and without recommending repairs you may not need. Here's how it works and when you should get one.
How a Sewer Camera Inspection Works
A sewer camera is a flexible, waterproof HD camera mounted on a cable that we feed through your sewer line from a cleanout access point or through a toilet. The camera transmits live video to a monitor, allowing us to see the interior of the pipe in real time.
Modern sewer cameras also have a locating transmitter — we can pinpoint the camera's exact location underground using a surface locator, which tells us precisely where a problem is and how deep it is. This is essential for planning any repair.
The entire inspection typically takes 30–60 minutes. We record the footage and provide it to you — you see exactly what we see, and you understand the problem before we recommend any repair.
What We Find
In Southern Maryland, the most common findings are:
- Root intrusion: Tree roots enter through joints and cracks, growing inside the pipe. This is the most common finding in homes with mature trees. Roots cause slow drains, backups, and eventually pipe collapse.
- Grease buildup: Kitchen grease accumulates on pipe walls over years, eventually blocking flow. Common in older homes without regular drain maintenance.
- Pipe deterioration: Cast iron pipes (common in homes built before 1980) corrode from the inside. Clay tile pipes (pre-1960s) crack and collapse. Orangeburg pipe (tar-paper pipe from the 1940s–70s) deteriorates and collapses.
- Offset joints: Pipe sections shift over time due to soil movement, tree roots, or settling — creating a step or gap at the joint that catches debris.
- Bellied pipe: A section of pipe sags, creating a low spot where solids accumulate.
- Cracks and holes: From root damage, corrosion, or ground movement.
When You Should Get a Sewer Camera Inspection
Before Buying a Home
This is the most important use of a sewer camera inspection. Home inspectors do not inspect sewer lines — they look at what's visible, and sewer lines are underground. We've found Orangeburg pipe, root intrusion, partial collapses, and offset joints in homes that passed their home inspection with flying colors.
A sewer camera inspection before closing costs contact us for a free estimate and can save you from a contact us for a free estimate sewer repair after you've already bought the house. If we find a problem, you can negotiate the repair into the sale price or walk away.
Recurring Drain Problems
If you have a drain that backs up repeatedly — even after snaking — there's a structural problem that snaking can't fix. A camera inspection will show you exactly what's causing the recurring backup.
Slow Drains Throughout the House
When multiple drains are slow simultaneously, the problem is in the main sewer line, not individual branch lines. A camera inspection identifies the location and nature of the blockage.
Before Any Major Sewer Repair
We run a camera before every sewer repair we perform. It's the only way to know exactly what we're dealing with, where the problem is, and what repair method is appropriate. Any plumber who recommends a sewer repair without camera inspection is guessing.
Older Homes (Pre-1980)
If you own a home built before 1980 and have never had a sewer camera inspection, it's worth doing proactively. Cast iron and clay tile pipes from this era are reaching the end of their service life throughout Southern Maryland.
What Happens After the Inspection
After the inspection, we review the footage with you and explain exactly what we found. If there's a problem, we give you a written estimate for the repair before any work begins. You see the footage, understand the problem, and make an informed decision.
If the line is clear, you have peace of mind — and a baseline recording to compare against in future inspections.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
