Drain Cleaning Methods Compared: Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting vs. Chemical
When a drain backs up, the right solution depends on what's causing the blockage and where it is. Snaking, hydro jetting, and chemical cleaners are all legitimate tools — but each has specific applications, limitations, and risks. Here's an honest comparison.
Drain Snaking (Mechanical Augering)
A drain snake (also called an auger) is a flexible metal cable with a cutting head that's fed into the drain and rotated to break through or retrieve a blockage. Hand snakes work on sink and tub drains; power snakes (drum machines) are used for main sewer lines.
When snaking is the right tool:
- Soft blockages: hair, soap scum, toilet paper, small objects
- Localized clogs in branch drain lines (sink, tub, toilet)
- Initial clearing of a backed-up drain to restore flow
- Cutting through light root intrusion
Limitations of snaking:
- Punches a hole through the blockage rather than removing it — grease and scale buildup remains on pipe walls
- Doesn't clean the full pipe diameter
- Can't remove heavy root intrusion or grease accumulation
- Doesn't address structural problems (offset joints, bellied pipe)
Snaking is often the right first step — it restores flow quickly and at lower cost. But if the same drain backs up repeatedly after snaking, there's a structural problem or heavy buildup that snaking can't address.
Hydro Jetting
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water (typically 3,000–4,000 PSI) delivered through a specialized nozzle to scour the interior of the pipe. The nozzle sprays water forward to cut through blockages and backward to propel itself through the line and clean the pipe walls.
When hydro jetting is the right tool:
- Grease accumulation in kitchen drain lines
- Heavy root intrusion (after camera inspection confirms the pipe can handle the pressure)
- Scale and mineral buildup inside pipes
- Recurring drain problems that snaking hasn't resolved
- Preventive maintenance on commercial kitchens or high-use drains
- Clearing the main sewer line before a camera inspection or repair
Limitations of hydro jetting:
- Higher cost than snaking
- Should not be used on pipes that are already structurally compromised — the pressure can worsen damage
- Requires a camera inspection first to confirm pipe condition
We always run a camera before hydro jetting a main sewer line. If the pipe has significant deterioration, cracks, or offset joints, hydro jetting at full pressure can cause further damage. The camera tells us what we're dealing with before we apply pressure.
Chemical Drain Cleaners
Chemical drain cleaners (Drano, Liquid-Plumr, etc.) use caustic chemicals — typically sodium hydroxide (lye) or sulfuric acid — to dissolve organic material in the drain.
When chemical cleaners might be appropriate:
- Slow sink drain with minor hair/soap buildup — as a temporary measure
- When a plumber isn't immediately available and you need partial flow restoration
Why we don't recommend chemical cleaners:
- They damage pipes. Caustic chemicals generate heat and attack pipe materials — particularly older PVC, ABS, and rubber gaskets. Repeated use accelerates pipe deterioration.
- They don't work on most blockages. Chemical cleaners dissolve organic material (hair, grease) but have no effect on root intrusion, scale buildup, or structural problems.
- They create a hazard for plumbers. If you've poured chemical cleaner into a drain and then call a plumber, the standing caustic water in the pipe is a serious safety hazard.
- They mask the real problem. A drain that repeatedly backs up has a structural or accumulation problem that chemicals won't fix.
The Camera-First Approach
For any recurring drain problem or main sewer line issue, we run a camera before recommending a cleaning method. The camera tells us:
- What's causing the blockage (grease, roots, structural)
- Where the blockage is located
- What condition the pipe is in
- Whether cleaning will solve the problem or whether repair is needed
This prevents recommending an expensive hydro jet on a pipe that needs replacement, and prevents snaking a line that has heavy grease accumulation that will back up again in two weeks.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
