Grease in Drain Pipes: Why It Happens and How to Prevent and Remove It
July 5, 2026 · 5 min read · By Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland
Grease, fats, and oils are the number one cause of kitchen drain clogs — and one of the leading causes of sewer line blockages. The problem is deceptively simple: grease is liquid when hot, but solidifies as it cools inside your pipes. Here is what you need to know.
What Never to Pour Down the Drain
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is grease bad for drain pipes?
Grease, fats, and oils (FOG) are liquid when hot but solidify as they cool inside your pipes. Over time, grease accumulates on the pipe walls, trapping food particles and other debris. The buildup narrows the pipe, slows drainage, and eventually causes complete blockages. Grease is the leading cause of kitchen drain clogs and is a major contributor to sewer line blockages.
What should I do with cooking grease instead of pouring it down the drain?
Let grease cool and solidify in the pan, then scrape it into a container (an old coffee can or jar works well) and dispose of it in the trash. For liquid oils, pour them into a sealed container and trash them. Never pour grease, oil, or fat down the drain — even with hot water running, which only moves the grease further into the pipe before it solidifies.
Does dish soap break down grease in pipes?
Dish soap can emulsify small amounts of grease, but it is not effective for clearing grease buildup in pipes. The emulsified grease still ends up in the sewer system where it can re-solidify and contribute to blockages. Hot water and dish soap are fine for washing dishes, but they do not prevent grease buildup in your drain pipes over time.
How do I remove grease buildup from my kitchen drain?
For minor buildup: pour boiling water down the drain, followed by baking soda and vinegar, then more boiling water. For significant buildup: professional drain cleaning or hydro jetting is the most effective solution. Hydro jetting scours the pipe walls clean, removing grease, scale, and debris. A drain snake can punch through a grease clog but does not remove the buildup from the pipe walls.
