Hydro Jetting vs. Drain Snaking: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Drain snaking and hydro jetting both clear clogs — but they work very differently and are right for different situations. Here's how to know which one your drain actually needs.
How Drain Snaking Works
A drain snake (also called a drain auger) is a flexible metal cable with a cutting head that's fed into the drain and rotated to break through or retrieve a clog. It's a mechanical solution — it punches through the blockage or hooks it and pulls it out.
Snaking is fast, relatively inexpensive, and effective for simple clogs — hair, soap buildup, small objects, and light grease accumulation. It's the right tool for a first-time clog in a bathroom drain or a kitchen drain that's been clear until recently.
The limitation of snaking is that it creates a hole through the blockage rather than removing it entirely. The pipe walls are still coated with whatever caused the clog — which means the clog often returns within weeks or months.
How Hydro Jetting Works
Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure water stream (typically 3,000–4,000 PSI) to scour the interior walls of the pipe clean. The jetting head has multiple nozzles — forward-facing jets to cut through blockages and rear-facing jets to propel the head through the pipe and flush debris downstream.
Hydro jetting doesn't just create a hole through the clog — it removes the clog entirely and cleans the pipe walls back to near-original condition. Grease, scale, mineral deposits, and even light root tendrils are completely removed.
When to Use Each Method
Use Snaking When:
- First-time clog in a bathroom drain
- Object lodged in the drain
- Single slow drain (not multiple)
- Recent installation or new home
- Budget is the primary concern
Use Hydro Jetting When:
- Recurring clogs (snaked 2+ times)
- Multiple slow drains in the home
- Grease buildup (kitchen or restaurant)
- Root intrusion (light tendrils)
- Pre-sale or pre-purchase inspection
- Main sewer line cleaning
The Camera Inspection Factor
Before hydro jetting, we always run a camera through the line. This is critical for two reasons: first, it confirms that the pipe is in good enough condition to withstand jetting pressure (severely deteriorated pipes can be damaged by high-pressure water). Second, it identifies the exact nature and location of the blockage so we can select the right jetting head and pressure setting.
A camera inspection also reveals problems that neither snaking nor jetting can fix — pipe bellies, collapsed sections, and severe root intrusion that requires excavation. Knowing this before you pay for jetting saves money and prevents surprises.
Cost Comparison
Drain snaking typically costs contact us for a free estimate for a standard residential drain. Hydro jetting costs contact us for a free estimate for a residential drain and contact us for a free estimate for a main sewer line. The higher upfront cost of jetting is often offset by the longer time before the next service call — a properly jetted drain may stay clear for 2–5 years versus 6–18 months for a snaked drain.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
