Drain Cleaning in Southern Maryland: The Complete Guide

From a slow kitchen drain to a sewage backup, drain problems range from a minor inconvenience to a health emergency. This resource center covers every drain and sewer issue we encounter in Calvert County and Anne Arundel County — what causes it, what actually fixes it, and when to call a plumber.

Snaking vs. Hydro-Jetting — Know the Difference

The right drain cleaning method depends on what is causing the clog and the condition of the pipe. Using the wrong method wastes money and leaves the underlying problem intact.

Cable Snaking (Augering)

Best for

Simple clogs, first-time blockages, soft obstructions

How it works

Rotating cable punches through the blockage and breaks it up. Clears the immediate obstruction.

Limitation

Leaves grease coating, scale, and root fragments on pipe walls. Does not clean the pipe — only clears the blockage. Recurring clogs return.

Hydro-Jetting

Best for

Recurring clogs, grease buildup, root intrusion, scale

How it works

2,000–4,000 PSI water jet completely cleans pipe walls — removes grease coating, scale, and cuts roots. Pipe is left clean, not just unblocked.

Limitation

Not appropriate for pipes with significant structural damage — high pressure can worsen cracks. Camera inspection recommended first.

Drain Problems — Find Your Issue

Different drain problems have different causes and different solutions. Start with the symptom you're experiencing.

Kitchen Drain Clogs

Kitchen drains clog from grease, food particles, and soap buildup. Grease is the most damaging — it coats the pipe walls and accumulates over years until the pipe is nearly closed. Liquid drain cleaners dissolve the immediate clog but leave the grease coating intact, and the caustic chemicals damage pipe joints over time. Hydro-jetting is the most effective treatment for grease-heavy kitchen lines because it cleans the pipe walls, not just punches through the blockage.

Bathroom Drain & Toilet Clogs

Bathroom drain clogs are typically caused by hair, soap scum, and toothpaste buildup in the P-trap and drain line. Toilet clogs are usually caused by excess toilet paper, wipes (even "flushable" ones), or foreign objects. A toilet that gurgles when you run the sink, or a sink that drains slowly when the toilet is flushed, indicates a shared drain line problem rather than an isolated fixture clog.

Floor Drain & Basement Backup

Floor drain backup — sewage coming up through a basement floor drain — is a main sewer line emergency, not a drain clog. Stop using all water in the home immediately. Every flush adds to the backup. This is different from a slow floor drain, which may be a localized clog in the floor drain's trap or branch line. If multiple drains are backing up simultaneously, you have a main line problem.

Recurring Drain Clogs

A drain that clogs repeatedly — every few months — is telling you something about the pipe condition, not just the contents. Recurring clogs in the same location usually indicate pipe scale buildup, root intrusion, a partial collapse, or a belly (low spot) in the pipe where debris accumulates. Snaking a recurring clog clears the immediate blockage but does not address the underlying cause. A camera inspection followed by hydro-jetting is the appropriate treatment.

Drain Cleaning FAQ

Should I use liquid drain cleaner for a clogged drain?
Liquid drain cleaners (Drano, Liquid-Plumr) are caustic chemicals that dissolve organic material. They can clear a simple hair or soap clog in a bathroom drain. However, they are not effective on grease clogs (they don't remove the grease coating on pipe walls), they don't work on root intrusion or pipe scale, and repeated use damages pipe joints and P-traps over time. For a recurring clog or a kitchen drain, professional drain cleaning is more effective and less damaging.
What is hydro-jetting and when do I need it?
Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water (2,000–4,000 PSI) to completely clean the inside of a drain or sewer pipe. Unlike snaking, which punches through a blockage, hydro-jetting removes the grease coating, scale buildup, and root fragments from the pipe walls. You need hydro-jetting when: a drain clogs repeatedly, a kitchen line has years of grease buildup, roots have been cut but keep regrowing, or a camera inspection shows significant scale or buildup.
How much does drain cleaning cost in Maryland?
Call for a free estimate — we provide upfront pricing before any work begins. Cost varies based on the type of drain, method required, and site conditions. Call (443) 440-0632 for a quote.
Why does my drain smell bad even though it drains fine?
A drain that smells but drains normally usually has one of three causes: a dry P-trap (the water seal has evaporated, allowing sewer gas to escape — common in floor drains and rarely-used fixtures), biofilm buildup on the drain walls and stopper, or a venting problem that allows sewer gas to be drawn into the fixture. Running water into the drain to refill the P-trap often resolves the smell immediately. If it returns, call us.
Can I prevent drain clogs?
Yes — the most effective prevention measures are: use a drain strainer in every shower and tub to catch hair, never pour grease down the kitchen drain (let it solidify and dispose in the trash), run hot water for 30 seconds after every use of the kitchen sink, and have your main sewer line hydro-jetted every 3–5 years if you have a history of clogs or a grease-heavy kitchen.
How do I know if I have a drain clog or a sewer line problem?
A single slow drain is usually a localized clog. Multiple slow drains, gurgling sounds from other fixtures when one is used, or sewage backing up into floor drains indicates a main sewer line problem. The definitive test: if your toilet gurgles when you run the washing machine, or if water backs up into the tub when you flush the toilet, you have a main line issue that requires camera inspection and likely hydro-jetting or repair.
