Frequently Asked Questions
How UV Disinfection Actually Works
UV disinfection is not a filter — it doesn't remove anything from the water. It uses ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength to permanently damage the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce or cause infection.
Water Enters the Chamber
Pretreated water flows through a stainless steel UV chamber at a controlled rate. Flow rate determines contact time with the UV lamp.
254nm UV Light Emitted
A low-pressure mercury lamp (or LED) emits UV light at 254 nanometers — the peak germicidal wavelength, where DNA absorbs UV energy most efficiently.
DNA Damage Occurs
UV photons are absorbed by thymine bases in microbial DNA, forming thymine dimers that prevent replication. The organism cannot reproduce or cause infection.
Safe Water Exits
Disinfected water exits the chamber and enters the home's distribution system. No chemicals, no taste change, no residual — just clean water.
NSF/ANSI 55 Class A — The Standard That Matters
NSF/ANSI 55 Class A is the certification standard for UV systems used for primary disinfection of microbiologically unsafe water. It requires a minimum UV dose of 40 mJ/cm² at the system's rated flow rate, achieving 4-log (99.99%) inactivation of bacteria and viruses. Class B systems are only rated for "supplemental" treatment of already safe water — they are not appropriate for well water with bacteria risk.
Every UV system we install is NSF/ANSI 55 Class A certified. We will not install Class B systems for primary disinfection.
What UV Treatment Kills
UV dose requirements vary by organism. A properly sized 40 mJ/cm² system achieves 4-log inactivation of all organisms listed below.
| Organism | Type | UV Dose Required | Inactivation at 40 mJ/cm² |
|---|---|---|---|
| E. coli | Bacteria | 6.6 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Total Coliform | Bacteria | 6.6 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Giardia lamblia | Protozoa | 10 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Cryptosporidium | Protozoa | 10 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Legionella | Bacteria | 12 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Hepatitis A | Virus | 21 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| Adenovirus | Virus | 30 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |
| MS2 Coliphage | Virus (indicator) | 186 mJ/cm² | 4-log (99.99%) |

Bacteria Risk in Southern Maryland Well Water
Why UV treatment is especially important for Calvert and Anne Arundel County homeowners.
Calvert County Well Water
~18% of wells
Approximately 18% of private wells in Calvert County test positive for total coliform bacteria at some point. Shallow wells and wells near septic systems are at highest risk. The Patuxent River watershed geology creates conditions where surface water can infiltrate older well casings.
Anne Arundel County Well Water
~15% of wells
Anne Arundel County's mix of agricultural land, dense development, and aging well infrastructure creates persistent bacteria risk. The county health department recommends annual bacteria testing for all private wells.
Post-Flooding Risk
Up to 40% contamination
After significant flooding events in Southern Maryland, studies show up to 40% of private wells test positive for bacteria. UV treatment provides immediate protection once the well is shock-chlorinated and cleared.
Seasonal Variation
Spring & fall peaks
Bacteria contamination in Southern Maryland wells peaks in spring (snowmelt and heavy rain) and fall (agricultural runoff). Homes without UV treatment are most vulnerable during these periods.
Maryland law requires private well owners to test their water before selling a home. But there is no requirement for ongoing testing — meaning many homeowners are drinking contaminated water without knowing it. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) recommends annual bacteria testing for all private wells.
Pre-Treatment Requirements
UV treatment only works in clear, clean water. This is the most misunderstood aspect of UV installation — and the reason many DIY or improperly installed systems fail silently. If your water exceeds any of these limits, pre-treatment is required before UV.
| Parameter | Maximum Limit | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Iron (Fe) | < 0.3 mg/L | Iron coats the quartz sleeve and blocks UV transmission. Even 0.5 mg/L causes measurable dose reduction. |
| Manganese (Mn) | < 0.05 mg/L | Like iron, manganese deposits on the sleeve and reduces UV output over time. |
| Turbidity | < 1 NTU | Suspended particles scatter UV light and create shadow zones where bacteria survive. |
| Hardness | < 7 gpg (120 mg/L) | Hard water causes scale buildup on the quartz sleeve, reducing UV transmission. |
| Tannins | < 0.1 mg/L | Tannins absorb UV light at 254nm — the exact wavelength used for disinfection. |
| UV Transmittance (UVT) | > 75% | UVT is the direct measure of how much UV light passes through the water. Below 75% requires a high-output system. |
The "Silent Failure" Problem
A UV system installed without proper pre-treatment will appear to work — the lamp is on, the indicator light is green — but bacteria are passing through untreated. Iron coating on the quartz sleeve, turbidity scattering UV light, or tannins absorbing the 254nm wavelength all reduce the effective UV dose below the 40 mJ/cm² threshold without any visible indication.
This is why we always test water quality before installation and verify UV output with a calibrated meter after installation. We don't assume — we measure.
The Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland UV Installation Process
Six steps that separate a properly installed UV system from one that looks installed but doesn't actually protect your family.
Comprehensive Water Test
We test for bacteria (coliform, E. coli), iron, manganese, turbidity, hardness, tannins, and UV transmittance (UVT). This determines whether pre-treatment is needed and which UV system size is appropriate. Never skip this step — a UV system installed in the wrong water conditions will fail silently.
Pre-Treatment Design
If iron, sediment, hardness, or tannins exceed UV limits, we design and install the upstream filtration first. This typically means a sediment filter (5-micron), iron filter (if Fe > 0.3 mg/L), and/or water softener. The UV system is always the last stage before water enters the home.
UV System Sizing & Selection
We size the UV system to your home's peak flow rate — not average flow. A system undersized for peak demand will allow bacteria through during high-flow events (multiple showers, irrigation). We select NSF/ANSI 55 Class A certified systems from Viqua, Pentair, or Atlantic UV.
Point-of-Entry Installation
The UV chamber is installed on the main supply line after all filtration equipment and before water enters the home. We use proper unions for easy lamp access, install a bypass valve for maintenance, and verify all connections are leak-free before energizing the system.
UV Output Verification
After installation, we verify UV output with a calibrated UV intensity meter. We confirm the system is delivering the required 40 mJ/cm² dose at your home's peak flow rate. This step is often skipped by other contractors — we never skip it.
Annual Maintenance Program
UV lamps degrade over 12 months regardless of appearance. We offer annual lamp replacement service, quartz sleeve cleaning, and water quality re-testing to ensure your system continues to perform. We'll contact you when it's time — you don't have to track it.
Choosing the Right UV System Size
UV systems must be sized to your home's peak flow rate — not average flow. An undersized system allows bacteria through during high-demand events.
Small (up to 8 GPM)
Viqua VH200 / Pentair 3GPM
1–2 bathrooms, 1–2 people
Ideal for vacation homes or small households
Medium (up to 12 GPM)
Viqua VH410 / Pentair 6GPM
2–3 bathrooms, 2–4 people
Most common residential installation
Large (up to 18 GPM)
Viqua VH410+ / Pentair 12GPM
3–4 bathrooms, 4–6 people
Larger homes with irrigation or multiple zones
High-Flow (up to 26 GPM)
Viqua Pro 20 / Atlantic UV
4+ bathrooms, 6+ people
Large homes, light commercial, farms
Not sure what size you need? We calculate peak flow rate based on your home's fixture count and well pump capacity — not guesswork. Call us and we'll size it correctly the first time.
UV Treatment vs. Chlorination
Both methods disinfect water — but they work very differently. Here's how they compare for residential well water applications.
| Feature | UV Treatment | Chlorination |
|---|---|---|
| Chemicals added | None | Sodium hypochlorite or chlorine gas |
| Taste / odor impact | Zero | Chlorine taste and odor possible |
| Disinfection byproducts | None | Trihalomethanes (THMs), HAAs |
| Cryptosporidium / Giardia | Highly effective | Resistant — chlorine ineffective |
| Contact time required | Instantaneous | 30 min+ contact time needed |
| Residual protection | None (point of entry only) | Residual through distribution |
| Maintenance | Annual lamp replacement | Ongoing chemical supply, injection pump |
| Operating cost/year | Low annual operating cost (lamp + electric) | Higher ongoing cost (chemicals + pump) |
| Best for | Residential well water | Municipal systems, high-bacteria wells |
When we recommend chlorination instead of (or in addition to) UV: Active well contamination with high bacteria counts, wells with confirmed iron bacteria (which form biofilms UV can't penetrate), or situations where residual disinfection through the distribution system is needed. In many cases, shock chlorination + UV is the complete solution — chlorination cleans the well, UV protects ongoing water quality.

UV as Part of a Complete Well Water Treatment System
UV treatment addresses biological contamination only. Most Southern Maryland well water has multiple issues — iron, hardness, low pH, sediment, and bacteria — that require a layered treatment approach. Here's how a complete system is typically designed.
Sediment Filter
5–20 micron whole-house filter. Removes sand, silt, rust particles. Protects all downstream equipment.
AlwaysIron / Sulfur Filter
Greensand, Birm, or air injection system. Required if Fe > 0.3 mg/L or H₂S present.
If iron > 0.3 mg/LWater Softener
Ion exchange softener. Required if hardness > 7 gpg to prevent scale on UV sleeve.
If hardness > 7 gpgCarbon Filter
Optional. Removes tannins, chlorine (post-shock), taste/odor compounds. Required if tannins > 0.1 mg/L.
If tannins presentUV Disinfection
NSF/ANSI 55 Class A system. Final stage before water enters the home. Destroys all remaining bacteria, viruses, protozoa.
Always — last stageWe Design the Whole System — Not Just the UV Unit
Many contractors install a UV system and walk away. We test your water, design the complete treatment train, install every stage in the correct order, and verify the whole system is performing. If your water has iron, we address the iron. If it has hardness, we address the hardness. The UV system at the end of the train is only as good as the pre-treatment before it.

What Southern Maryland Homeowners Say
Savannah Foster
Southern Maryland
May 2026
"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
George Baker III
Annapolis, MD
May 2026
"We recently had Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland out to our home in Annapolis after we suddenly started noticing sewer flies throughout the house. They truly lived up to their name and performed a full "deep dive" diagnostic inspection instead of just treating the symptom. During their inspection they discovered our sewer pipe connected to the toilet had been leaking into the basement for quite some time. The team explained everything clearly, provided upfront pricing before starting any work, and even gave us a military discount which was greatly appreciated. They were professional, respectful, extremely knowledgeable, and took the time to make sure the repair was done correctly."

"We had a mystery leak in our bathroom and everyone who saw it was convinced it was coming from inside the wall. He came out, checked everything, and was super thorough instead of just guessing. Turns out it was actually a leak from the toilet tank that was dripping in a way that made it look like it was coming from the opposite wall. He was super patient with all of our questions and explained the fix. We really appreciated his professionalism and transparency. Having an older home, it can be stressful not knowing what kind of repair you're walking into. I highly recommend him if you want someone trustworthy and knowledgeable who genuinely just wants to help."
