Bacterial contamination is the most common well water problem in Calvert County and Anne Arundel County — and one of the most serious. Unlike iron staining or sulfur odor, bacteria contamination is invisible, odorless, and tasteless. The only way to know your well water is safe is to test it.
Total coliform bacteria are the most commonly detected contaminants in Southern Maryland well water. Coliform bacteria are not necessarily harmful themselves, but their presence indicates that surface water or soil has entered the well — and where coliform goes, more dangerous pathogens can follow. UV System Installation After Coliform Detection — Lothian, MD
A family in Lothian had their well water tested as part of a home purchase. The test came back positive for total coliform bacteria. The well was 35 years old and had never been tested. We inspected the well cap and found a small crack that was allowing surface water infiltration.
We replaced the cracked well cap with a new sanitary cap, shock chlorinated the well following MDE protocol, and installed a Viqua D4 UV disinfection system at the point of entry as a permanent biological barrier. Follow-up bacteria test: negative for total coliform and E. coli. The home sale closed on schedule.
