UV water treatment — also called UV water purification, UV water disinfection, or UV water filtration — uses ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in your water supply. It is not a filter and does not remove anything from the water. It simply renders microorganisms unable to reproduce or cause infection.

How UV Systems Work

A UV water treatment system consists of a stainless steel chamber containing a UV lamp enclosed in a quartz sleeve. Water flows through the chamber and is exposed to UV light at 254 nanometers — the peak germicidal wavelength where DNA absorbs UV energy most efficiently.

When UV photons are absorbed by microbial DNA, they cause thymine dimers to form — essentially fusing adjacent DNA bases together. This damage prevents the organism from replicating. A bacterium that cannot replicate cannot cause infection, even if it remains in the water.

The process is instantaneous — there is no contact time required, no holding tank, and no chemicals. Water enters the chamber contaminated and exits disinfected in a fraction of a second.
