UV Disinfection for Well Water: How It Works & When You Need It
UV disinfection is one of the most effective and chemical-free ways to protect your family from bacteria and viruses in well water. But it's not a standalone solution — it has to be installed correctly in the right position in your treatment system. Here's what you need to know.
How UV Disinfection Works
A UV disinfection system exposes water to ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength (254 nanometers) as it flows through a stainless steel chamber. This UV energy penetrates the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, disrupting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. The microorganisms are rendered harmless — they can't infect you, and they can't multiply.
UV disinfection is effective against bacteria (including E. coli and coliform), viruses, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. It works without adding any chemicals to your water — no chlorine taste, no byproducts, no chemical handling.
What UV Doesn't Do
UV disinfection kills microorganisms — that's it. It does not:
- Remove iron, hardness, or other minerals
- Improve taste or odor
- Remove sediment or turbidity
- Remove nitrates, arsenic, or other chemical contaminants
UV is one component of a complete water treatment system — not a replacement for filtration.
The Critical Requirement: Clear Water
UV disinfection only works in clear water. If your water has turbidity (cloudiness), iron, tannins, or other particles, those particles shield microorganisms from the UV light — bacteria can hide behind a particle and pass through the chamber unaffected.
This is why UV must always be installed after all filtration in your treatment system. The correct sequence:
- 1. Sediment pre-filter
- 2. Acid neutralizer (if needed)
- 3. Iron/manganese filter (if needed)
- 4. Water softener (if needed)
- 5. UV disinfection — always last
Installing UV before filtration is a common mistake that renders the system ineffective. We've seen homes where a UV system was installed directly after the pressure tank — on water with 3 mg/L iron — providing essentially no disinfection.
When Do You Need UV Disinfection?
Not every well needs UV disinfection. Here are the situations where we recommend it:
- Positive bacteria test: If your water test shows total coliform or E. coli, UV provides ongoing protection after the well is shock-chlorinated.
- Shallow well: Wells under 100 feet are more susceptible to surface contamination, especially after heavy rain or flooding.
- Near septic systems or agricultural land: Higher risk of bacterial contamination from nearby sources.
- Older well casing: Cracked or deteriorating well casings allow surface water infiltration.
- Immunocompromised household members: Extra protection for households with infants, elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.
- After flooding: Any well that has been flooded should be shock-chlorinated and tested, with UV as ongoing protection.
UV System Maintenance
UV systems require minimal but important maintenance:
- Annual lamp replacement: UV lamps degrade over time — output drops to about 60% of original after 9,000 hours (approximately one year of continuous use). Replace the lamp annually, even if it still appears to be glowing.
- Quartz sleeve cleaning: The quartz sleeve that surrounds the lamp can accumulate mineral deposits, reducing UV transmission. Clean annually with a mild acid solution.
- Pre-filter maintenance: Keep upstream filters maintained — a clogged sediment filter reduces flow and UV contact time.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
