Iron Bacteria in Well Water: What It Is and What to Do
Orange staining, slime in your toilet tank, and a metallic taste are all signs of iron bacteria. It's more common than you think — and more treatable than you'd expect.
What Is Iron Bacteria?
Iron bacteria are naturally occurring microorganisms that thrive in groundwater containing iron and manganese. They're not pathogens — they don't directly cause illness — but they create significant problems for well water quality, plumbing systems, and appliances.
These bacteria feed on dissolved iron in the water, oxidizing it and creating a reddish-brown slime (called a biofilm) that coats pipes, fixtures, and the inside of your well. The slime itself is what causes most of the visible problems homeowners notice.
Signs of Iron Bacteria in Your Well Water
Why Filter Cartridges Don't Fix It
This is one of the most common mistakes we see. Homeowners buy sediment filter cartridges, change them every month when they turn orange, and assume the problem is being managed. It's not.
Standard sediment filters catch the oxidized iron particles — the visible orange stuff — but they don't address the bacteria producing it. The bacteria continue to colonize the well, the pipes, and the filter housing itself. You're treating the symptom, not the cause.
Proper iron bacteria treatment requires addressing the biological component — not just filtering the iron it produces.
How Iron Bacteria Is Properly Treated
Well shock chlorination
High-concentration chlorine treatment kills iron bacteria in the well casing and surrounding formation. This is often the first step, but it's not a permanent solution on its own if the source of bacteria isn't addressed.
Continuous chlorination system
A chemical feed pump injects a controlled amount of chlorine into the water before it enters the home. The chlorine kills bacteria and oxidizes iron, which is then filtered out by a carbon filter.
Air injection / oxidizing filtration
Air injection systems oxidize iron without chemicals. The oxidized iron is then filtered out. Effective for iron without significant bacterial load.
Greensand or catalytic carbon filtration
Specialized filter media that oxidizes and removes iron and manganese. Often combined with other treatment for comprehensive results.
Whole-house iron filtration system
A properly sized and configured whole-house system addresses iron, manganese, and bacteria in a single treatment train — the most effective long-term solution for significant iron bacteria problems.
The Right Diagnosis First
Iron bacteria treatment isn't one-size-fits-all. The right solution depends on the iron concentration, whether manganese is also present, the bacterial load, your water's pH, and your household water usage. We test first, then recommend — so you get a system that actually solves the problem.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
