The source matters enormously, because the wrong treatment will not fix it. This guide covers every cause, how to diagnose it at home, and the correct treatment for each scenario.

The Three Sources of Sulfur Smell in Well Water

Not all sulfur smells come from the same place — and diagnosing the source correctly is the first step to fixing it. There are three primary sources of hydrogen sulfide (the gas responsible for the rotten egg odor) in residential well water systems:

Source 1: Hydrogen Sulfide in the Groundwater

Some aquifers in Southern Maryland naturally contain dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. This is a geological condition — sulfur-reducing bacteria in the aquifer produce hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct of their metabolism. If the smell is present in both hot and cold water and is consistent year-round, dissolved hydrogen sulfide in the groundwater is the likely source.

Source 2: Sulfur Bacteria in the Well or Pipes

Sulfate-reducing bacteria can colonize the well casing, pressure tank, and pipes. These bacteria convert dissolved sulfates in the water to hydrogen sulfide. The smell may be intermittent — worse after the water has been sitting (first draw in the morning) and better after running the water for a few minutes. This is a biological contamination problem, not a geological one.

Source 3: Sulfur Bacteria in the Water Heater

The most common source of rotten egg smell that affects only hot water is sulfur bacteria in the water heater tank. The warm, low-oxygen environment of a water heater is ideal for sulfate-reducing bacteria. The magnesium anode rod in most water heaters reacts with sulfur bacteria to produce additional hydrogen sulfide. If the smell is only from hot water, the water heater is almost certainly the source.

How to Diagnose the Source at Home

Before calling a plumber, you can narrow down the source with a simple diagnostic test:

Water heater is the primary source. The anode rod and/or sulfur bacteria in the tank need to be addressed.

Treatment Options by Source

For Sulfur Bacteria in the Water Heater

The first step is replacing the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc anode, which reacts less aggressively with sulfur bacteria. The water heater should also be flushed and disinfected. If the smell returns, the underlying water supply needs to be treated — UV disinfection or continuous chlorination upstream of the water heater will prevent bacteria from recolonizing the tank.

For Sulfur Bacteria in the Well

Well shock chlorination kills bacteria in the well casing and pipes. However, bacteria will recolonize without ongoing treatment. A UV disinfection system installed at the point of entry provides continuous protection against bacterial recontamination. For severe cases, continuous chlorination may be more effective than UV alone.

For Dissolved Hydrogen Sulfide in the Groundwater

Dissolved hydrogen sulfide requires oxidation to convert it to a removable form. Aeration (exposing the water to air) is the most effective method for high concentrations. Chlorine injection or air injection followed by filtration is the standard treatment approach. A water test is essential to determine the hydrogen sulfide concentration and design the correct treatment system.

Why the Wrong Treatment Fails

We frequently encounter homeowners who have spent money on treatment that did not work — because the treatment was not matched to the source. A UV system installed to treat dissolved hydrogen sulfide in the groundwater will not reduce the smell at all — UV kills bacteria but does not remove dissolved gases. A water softener will not address sulfur smell from any source. An iron filter without upstream oxidation will not remove hydrogen sulfide effectively.

The Anode Rod and Sulfur Smell — What Most Plumbers Miss

The anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod inside your water heater tank — typically magnesium — that corrodes slowly to protect the tank lining from rust. It is one of the most important components for extending water heater life. However, magnesium anode rods have a well-documented interaction with sulfur bacteria: the magnesium reacts with sulfate-reducing bacteria to produce additional hydrogen sulfide gas, significantly amplifying the rotten egg smell.

Replacing the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc combination anode rod is often the fastest way to reduce hot water sulfur smell. Aluminum/zinc anodes still protect the tank but react far less aggressively with sulfur bacteria. This is not a permanent fix if the underlying water supply has sulfur bacteria — but it is an important first step and often provides immediate relief while the water supply treatment is designed and installed.

Iron and Sulfur Removal — When Both Problems Exist Together

Iron and sulfur problems frequently occur together in Southern Maryland well water. The same geological conditions that produce high dissolved iron — low-oxygen, reducing groundwater environments — also favor the growth of sulfur bacteria and the presence of hydrogen sulfide. This creates a treatment challenge: the correct approach for iron removal and the correct approach for sulfur removal must be designed to work together, not against each other.

For well water with both iron and sulfur problems, the typical treatment sequence is: (1) oxidation injection (air or chlorine) to oxidize dissolved iron and kill sulfur bacteria, (2) a catalytic carbon or greensand filter to remove oxidized iron and hydrogen sulfide, (3) a water softener if hardness is also present, and (4) UV disinfection as a final barrier against bacteria. The exact design depends on your water test results — iron concentration, pH, sulfur levels, and whether iron bacteria are also present.

Air Injection Systems

Air is injected into the water line to oxidize dissolved iron and drive off hydrogen sulfide gas. Effective for moderate iron and sulfur levels. No chemicals required.

Chlorine Injection Systems

A metered chlorine pump injects a precise amount of chlorine to oxidize iron, kill sulfur bacteria, and oxidize hydrogen sulfide. More effective than air injection for severe iron bacteria and high sulfur levels.

Catalytic Carbon Filtration

Catalytic carbon media removes hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese through oxidation and adsorption. Effective for moderate levels without chemical injection.

Greensand Filtration

Greensand media (coated with manganese dioxide) oxidizes and filters iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Requires periodic regeneration with potassium permanganate.

Well Contamination — When Sulfur Smell Indicates a Bigger Problem

In most cases, sulfur smell in well water is a nuisance problem — unpleasant but not a direct health threat. However, sulfur smell can sometimes indicate a more serious contamination issue that requires immediate attention. If the sulfur smell appeared suddenly after a flood, heavy rain, or nearby construction, it may indicate that surface water has infiltrated the well — bringing with it bacteria, nitrates, or other contaminants. If the smell is accompanied by gastrointestinal illness in household members, the well should be tested for coliform bacteria and E. coli immediately.

Sulfur bacteria and coliform bacteria can coexist in a contaminated well. A positive coliform test requires immediate shock chlorination of the well and investigation of the contamination source.
