Whole-Home Water Filtration Installation — Dunkirk, MD
A Dunkirk family had orange water, a sulfur smell, and low pH that was corroding their copper pipes. We designed and installed a complete treatment train — sediment filter, acid neutralizer, iron/sulfur filter, and UV disinfection — addressing every water quality issue in the correct sequence.
The Problem
A family in Dunkirk called with multiple water quality problems: orange-tinted water with a faint sulfur smell, blue-green staining on fixtures (indicating copper corrosion from acidic water), and a water softener that had been regenerating every day without improving the water quality. They had been buying bottled water for drinking for two years.
Our Diagnosis
Comprehensive water test results: iron 4.2 ppm, hydrogen sulfide 0.8 ppm, pH 5.9 (significantly acidic), hardness 18 gpg, coliform bacteria negative. The acidic pH was the root cause of the copper corrosion and blue-green staining. The existing water softener was working but was not designed to handle iron at this concentration, and the acidic water was degrading the softener resin. The treatment sequence was critical — acid neutralization had to come before iron filtration, and iron filtration had to come before the softener.
The Repair Process
- 1Comprehensive water test: iron 4.2 ppm, H2S 0.8 ppm, pH 5.9, hardness 18 gpg
- 2Designed treatment train in correct sequence for this water chemistry
- 3Installed 20-micron sediment pre-filter to protect downstream equipment
- 4Installed calcite acid neutralizer — raised pH from 5.9 to 7.3
- 5Installed Katalox-Light iron/sulfur oxidizing filter — removes iron and H2S
- 6Rebuilt existing water softener with fresh resin (old resin was iron-fouled)
- 7Installed UV disinfection system as final stage before distribution
- 8Retested water at 30 days: iron 0.05 ppm, H2S undetectable, pH 7.3, hardness 1 gpg
The Outcome
Orange water and sulfur smell eliminated within one week. Blue-green staining stopped immediately as the pH was corrected. The family stopped buying bottled water. The water softener is now performing correctly with the iron filter protecting the resin. The copper pipes, which had been showing signs of pitting corrosion, are no longer being attacked by acidic water.
Key Takeaway
Water treatment sequence matters enormously. Installing equipment in the wrong order — or installing a softener without first addressing iron and pH — wastes money and can make problems worse. Always test first, then design the treatment train based on the actual water chemistry.

"We recently had Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland out to our home in Annapolis after we suddenly started noticing sewer flies throughout the house. They truly lived up to their name and performed a full "deep dive" diagnostic inspection instead of just treating the symptom. During their inspection they discovered our sewer pipe connected to the toilet had been leaking into the basement for quite some time. The team explained everything clearly, provided upfront pricing before starting any work, and even gave us a military discount which was greatly appreciated. They were professional, respectful, extremely knowledgeable, and took the time to make sure the repair was done correctly."
