Iron Bacteria Treatment & Filtration — Chesapeake Beach, MD

Orange staining on every fixture, laundry with rust streaks, and a water softener that wasn't helping. We found iron bacteria fouling the softener resin and 8 ppm iron in the water. A shock chlorination plus oxidizing iron filter solved what two years of softener service couldn't.

!

The Problem

A homeowner in Chesapeake Beach called with severe orange staining on every fixture — toilets, sinks, shower walls, and tub. Laundry was coming out with rust-colored streaks. The homeowner had a water softener installed two years prior by another company, but the staining had actually gotten worse since the softener was installed. The water also had a faint slime-like quality and a musty odor.

Our Diagnosis

We performed a comprehensive water test. Results showed 8 ppm ferrous iron, iron bacteria present (confirmed by the slime and musty odor), and a pH of 6.4 (acidic). The existing water softener was installed without a prior water test and was not designed to handle iron at this concentration. Worse, the iron bacteria was colonizing the softener resin, fouling it and making the staining problem worse. The softener was essentially a breeding ground for iron bacteria.

The Repair Process

  1. 1Performed comprehensive water test: iron 8 ppm, iron bacteria positive, pH 6.4
  2. 2Shock chlorinated the well with 200 ppm chlorine solution — let sit 24 hours
  3. 3Flushed the well and all plumbing until chlorine was no longer detectable
  4. 4Rebuilt the existing water softener with fresh resin (old resin was iron-fouled)
  5. 5Installed a Katalox-Light oxidizing iron filter ahead of the softener
  6. 6Set iron filter backwash cycle for every 3 days
  7. 7Installed an acid neutralizer to bring pH to 7.2–7.4
  8. 8Retested water at 30 days: iron below 0.1 ppm, bacteria negative

The Outcome

Orange staining eliminated within two weeks of installation as existing iron deposits were flushed through. Water test at 30 days showed iron below 0.1 ppm and iron bacteria negative. The softener is now performing correctly with the iron filter protecting the resin. The homeowner's fixtures are clean for the first time in years, and laundry comes out without rust stains.

Key Takeaway

Installing a water softener without first testing for iron bacteria is a common and costly mistake. Iron bacteria fouls softener resin and makes iron problems worse. Always test before treating — the right sequence is: shock chlorinate, then filter iron, then soften.

"We recently had Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland out to our home in Annapolis after we suddenly started noticing sewer flies throughout the house. They truly lived up to their name and performed a full "deep dive" diagnostic inspection instead of just treating the symptom. During their inspection they discovered our sewer pipe connected to the toilet had been leaking into the basement for quite some time. The team explained everything clearly, provided upfront pricing before starting any work, and even gave us a military discount which was greatly appreciated. They were professional, respectful, extremely knowledgeable, and took the time to make sure the repair was done correctly."
