Whole-Home Sediment Filter Replacement — Chesapeake Beach, MD

A Chesapeake Beach homeowner had a whole-home sediment filter that had never been properly maintained. The clogged filter housing was causing a 22 PSI pressure drop across the filter alone, starving every fixture in the house. We replaced the housing, upgraded to a higher-capacity filter, and set up a maintenance schedule.

The Problem

A Chesapeake Beach homeowner called complaining of low water pressure that had been getting progressively worse over two years. They had a whole-home sediment filter installed when they bought the house six years ago and had never changed the cartridge — they didn't know it needed to be changed. By the time we arrived, pressure at the kitchen tap was 18 PSI. The filter housing itself had developed a crack from the pressure differential, and the cartridge was so clogged it had collapsed inward.

Our Diagnosis

We measured pressure before and after the filter housing: 40 PSI inlet, 18 PSI outlet — a 22 PSI drop across a single filter that should cause no more than 1–2 PSI drop when clean. The collapsed cartridge had also allowed sediment to bypass around the sides, meaning the filter was simultaneously starving the house of pressure AND no longer filtering effectively. The housing crack was allowing a slow leak that had been wicking into the drywall behind the utility room wall. The well water test showed 8.4 mg/L of iron and significant turbidity — this well genuinely needed filtration, and the homeowner had been without effective filtration for years.

The Repair Process

  1. 1Shut off well pump and depressurized the system
  2. 2Removed the cracked 10-inch standard filter housing
  3. 3Inspected the wall behind the housing — found moisture damage requiring drywall repair (referred to contractor)
  4. 4Installed a 20-inch Big Blue filter housing rated for higher flow with a 3/4-inch port
  5. 5Installed a 20-inch x 4.5-inch 5-micron sediment cartridge rated for 100,000 gallons
  6. 6Added a pressure gauge before and after the filter housing for ongoing monitoring
  7. 7Installed a filter change reminder tag with the date and recommended change interval (every 6 months for this well)
  8. 8Restored system pressure — 40 PSI inlet, 38.5 PSI outlet with new clean cartridge
  9. 9Tested water at all fixtures — full pressure restored throughout the home

The Outcome

Pressure at the kitchen tap went from 18 PSI to 38 PSI immediately after the new housing and cartridge were installed. The homeowner now has a maintenance schedule and understands that sediment filter cartridges must be changed regularly — especially with high-iron well water. The pressure gauges on either side of the housing let them monitor filter loading and know when a change is due without guessing. The moisture damage behind the wall was caught early enough to prevent mold.

Key Takeaway

A clogged sediment filter can cause more pressure loss than a failing pump. Whole-home filters require regular cartridge changes — the interval depends on your water quality. High-iron well water in Calvert County can clog a standard 10-inch cartridge in as little as 3 months.

"We recently had Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland out to our home in Annapolis after we suddenly started noticing sewer flies throughout the house. They truly lived up to their name and performed a full "deep dive" diagnostic inspection instead of just treating the symptom. During their inspection they discovered our sewer pipe connected to the toilet had been leaking into the basement for quite some time. The team explained everything clearly, provided upfront pricing before starting any work, and even gave us a military discount which was greatly appreciated. They were professional, respectful, extremely knowledgeable, and took the time to make sure the repair was done correctly."
