Walk into any home improvement store and you will find water filters marketed as solutions for every problem. The reality is more nuanced. A water softener installed on water with high iron will foul the resin bed within months. A UV system installed on turbid water will allow bacteria to pass through untreated — the particles shield the bacteria from the UV light. An iron filter installed without upstream pH correction will not perform correctly if the water is acidic. Water treatment is a system, not a product — and every component must be matched to your specific water chemistry and installed in the correct order.

The Most Common Water Quality Problems in Calvert County and Anne Arundel County

Iron

Signs: Orange/rust staining on fixtures, laundry, and dishwasher; metallic taste; orange water

Treatment: Iron filter (catalytic carbon or greensand), often with upstream oxidation

Hardness (Calcium & Magnesium)

Signs: White scale on faucets and appliances; soap scum; water heater failure; dry skin and hair

Treatment: Water softener (ion exchange)

Low pH (Acidic Water)

The Correct Order of Installation — Why It Matters

Water treatment components must be installed in the correct sequence. Each component protects the ones downstream from it. Installing them out of order reduces effectiveness and can damage equipment.

Sediment Pre-Filter

Removes particles that would clog or damage all downstream equipment. Always first.

2nd

Acid Neutralizer (if needed)

Corrects pH before iron filtration. Iron filters perform poorly in acidic water.

3rd

Oxidation (if needed)

Chlorine injection or air injection oxidizes dissolved iron and kills bacteria before filtration.

Iron / Manganese Filter

Removes oxidized iron and manganese. Must come after oxidation for dissolved iron.

Water Filtration in Southern Maryland: What Your County Needs

The right filtration system depends entirely on your water test results. That said, here's what we typically find — and install — in each county based on hundreds of water tests across the region:

Calvert County (Dunkirk, Owings, Prince Frederick, Huntingtown, Chesapeake Beach)

Typical water chemistry: High iron (3–15 ppm), moderate hardness (8–18 GPG), occasional sulfur odor, pH near neutral

Most Calvert County homes need: (1) Sediment pre-filter, (2) Iron/manganese filter (air injection or greensand), (3) Water softener for hardness, (4) UV disinfection if bacteria is present. Homes with sulfur odor add an aeration or oxidation stage before the iron filter.

Anne Arundel County (Davidsonville, Edgewater, Lothian, Churchton)

Typical water chemistry: Low pH (5.8–6.5), moderate iron (1–8 ppm), high hardness (15–25 GPG), occasional bacteria

Anne Arundel County homes almost always need an acid neutralizer first — before any other treatment. Acidic water must be corrected before iron filtration or softening, or the downstream equipment will not function correctly. Typical system: (1) Sediment pre-filter, (2) Acid neutralizer, (3) Iron filter, (4) Water softener, (5) UV disinfection.

South Calvert County (Lusby, Solomons)

Typical water chemistry: Moderate iron (2–10 ppm), moderate-high hardness (12–22 GPG), pH near neutral

Calvert County water chemistry is similar to Calvert County. Many homes have aging or undersized iron filters that need to be replaced or upgraded. Typical system: (1) Sediment pre-filter, (2) Iron filter, (3) Water softener, (4) UV disinfection if bacteria is present.
