We test your water hardness before recommending a softener. We size it correctly for your household. We install it in the right position in your treatment sequence. Maryland Licensed Master Plumber Terry Foster (#98433).
Most Southern Maryland well water is hard — typically 10–25 grains per gallon (GPG). Hard water causes scale buildup that destroys appliances, clogs fixtures, and dramatically shortens the life of your water heater. Here is what hard water does to your home over time:
Scale buildup on water heater elements and tank walls reduces efficiency and causes premature failure. A water heater in hard water may last only 6–8 years instead of 12–15.
Scale clogs aerators, showerheads, and faucet cartridges. Fixtures that should last 20 years fail in 5–7 years in hard water.
Hard water scale destroys dishwasher spray arms, washing machine valves, and ice maker lines. Appliance warranties are often voided by hard water damage.
Hard water prevents soap from lathering properly. You use 2–3x more soap, shampoo, and detergent than you would with soft water.
Hard water leaves a film on skin and hair, causing dryness and irritation. Many customers report significant improvement in skin and hair quality after softener installation.
Over decades, hard water deposits scale inside pipes, reducing flow and eventually causing blockages. Soft water eliminates this problem entirely.
This is the most important — and most commonly violated — rule in water treatment. If your water has iron above 3 ppm, the iron filter must come before the softener in your treatment sequence.
Here is why: a water softener works by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions using resin beads. Iron is not removed by this process — it passes through the resin and fouls it. Once the resin is iron-fouled, the softener stops working and must be rebuilt or replaced.
We test your water for iron, hardness, and pH before designing any treatment system. If you have iron, we install the iron filter first. If you have low pH, we install the acid neutralizer first. The correct order of operation is not optional — it determines whether your system works or fails.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
