The Calvert County Aquifer — Why Your Water Is the Way It Is
Calvert County's groundwater comes from the Aquia, Magothy, and Patuxent aquifer formations — layers of sand and gravel deposited during ancient sea level changes. These formations are naturally rich in iron-bearing minerals, and the water that moves through them picks up dissolved iron, manganese, and other minerals along the way.
The county's soils are also acidic — a result of the organic-rich Coastal Plain geology. Rainwater percolating through these soils picks up carbon dioxide and becomes slightly acidic before reaching the aquifer. By the time it reaches your well, it may have a pH of 5.5–6.5 — acidic enough to corrode copper pipes and fixtures over time.

Iron and Iron Bacteria
Iron is the #1 water quality complaint in Calvert County. The county sits on the Coastal Plain aquifer system, which naturally contains dissolved iron. Concentrations above 0.3 mg/L cause orange staining on fixtures, laundry, and appliances. Iron bacteria — organisms that feed on iron — create orange slime in toilet tanks and a metallic taste in water.
Solution: Iron filter (oxidizing filter or air injection system) for dissolved iron; chlorination + iron filter for iron bacteria.
Low pH (Acidic Water)
Calvert County well water frequently tests below 7.0 pH — sometimes as low as 5.5–6.0. Acidic water is corrosive: it dissolves copper from pipes, leaving blue-green staining on fixtures and sinks. Over time, acidic water pinholes copper pipes and damages water heaters, appliances, and fixtures.
Solution: Acid neutralizer (calcite or calcite/corosex blend) raises pH to 7.0–7.5 and eliminates corrosion.
Hardness
Hard water — high calcium and magnesium content — is common in Calvert County well water. Hard water leaves white scale deposits on faucets, showerheads, and inside water heaters and dishwashers. It reduces soap lather and shortens appliance life.
Solution: Water softener removes hardness minerals through ion exchange.
Sulfur / Hydrogen Sulfide
The rotten egg smell in well water is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas — either dissolved in the water or produced by sulfur bacteria in the well or water heater. It is more common in deeper wells and in areas with organic-rich soils.
Solution: Aeration, chlorination, or oxidizing filtration depending on the source and concentration.
Sediment
Sandy or silty water is common in shallow wells and in areas with sandy Coastal Plain soils. Sediment clogs fixtures, damages pump impellers, and shortens appliance life.
Solution: Sediment filter (spin-down or cartridge) at the point of entry.
Coliform Bacteria
Total coliform and E. coli contamination can occur in any well, but is more common in shallow wells, wells near septic systems, and wells that have not been properly maintained. Maryland recommends annual testing for bacteria.
Solution: UV disinfection system or chlorination system; well inspection and shock chlorination if contamination is found.
