8 Signs Your Well Pump Is Failing
Well pumps rarely fail without warning. Most give you weeks or months of warning signs before they stop working completely. Knowing what to look for can mean the difference between a planned replacement and an emergency call on a Saturday morning with no water.
Low or Fluctuating Water Pressure
Pressure that drops during showers, when multiple fixtures run, or that varies noticeably throughout the day is often the first sign of a pump struggling to maintain output. It can also indicate a failing pressure tank.
Air Sputtering from Faucets
Air in the water lines — causing faucets to sputter and spit — indicates the pump is drawing air, which means the water level in the well has dropped below the pump intake, or the pump is losing its prime.
Pump Short-Cycling
The pump starts and stops every few seconds. This is usually caused by a waterlogged pressure tank, but it can also indicate a pump that can't maintain pressure — running constantly to keep up with demand.
Pump Running Constantly
A pump that never shuts off is either unable to build pressure (failing motor or impeller), or there's a leak in the system. Either way, a pump running 24/7 will fail quickly from overheating.
Discolored or Sandy Water
Brown, orange, or sandy water from a well that previously ran clear indicates the pump is drawing sediment — often because the pump has dropped deeper in the well, the well screen is failing, or the pump impeller is worn.
Higher Electric Bills
A failing pump motor draws more current as it struggles to maintain output. If your electric bill has increased without an obvious explanation, your pump may be working harder than it should.
Pressure Gauge Needle Bouncing
A pressure gauge that bounces or fluctuates rapidly (rather than rising and falling smoothly) indicates pump short-cycling or a waterlogged pressure tank — both of which damage the pump.
Pump Over 10 Years Old
Most submersible well pumps last 8–15 years. If your pump is over 10 years old and showing any of the above signs, proactive replacement is often less expensive than emergency replacement after a complete failure.
Don't Wait for a Complete Failure
A well pump that fails completely leaves your household without water. If your pump is showing multiple warning signs, call us for a diagnostic inspection. We can often identify the problem before it becomes an emergency — and give you time to plan the repair or replacement on your schedule.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
