Well Water Testing Guide for Maryland Homeowners
If your home is on a private well, you are responsible for your own water quality. Unlike municipal water, private wells are not tested or treated by any government agency. Here's what to test for, how often, and what the results mean for your family's health and your plumbing.
Why Well Water Testing Matters
Many well water contaminants have no taste, odor, or color. You can't tell by looking at your water whether it contains bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, or elevated manganese. The only way to know is to test. The EPA recommends testing private wells at least annually for bacteria and nitrates, and more frequently if you notice changes in taste, odor, or appearance.
What to Test For in Southern Maryland
Bacteria in well water is a serious health risk. Test annually and after any flooding, well work, or change in taste/odor.
Iron above 0.3 PPM causes orange staining and metallic taste. Common in Southern Maryland well water.
Low pH (acidic water) corrodes copper pipes, water heaters, and appliances. Common in Calvert County.
Hard water causes scale buildup on fixtures and appliances. Affects water softener sizing.
Manganese above 0.05 PPM causes black staining and is a neurological concern at high levels.
Causes rotten egg smell. Indicates sulfur in the aquifer or sulfur bacteria.
Health risk for infants. Common near agricultural areas. No taste or odor.
Naturally occurring in some Maryland aquifers. No taste or odor. Carcinogenic at elevated levels.
When to Test More Frequently
Test immediately if you notice: a change in water taste, odor, or color; flooding near the well; any work done on the well or nearby; a new baby in the household; or a neighbor's well testing positive for contamination.
We offer free on-site water testing for homeowners in Calvert County and Anne Arundel County. We test for iron, pH, hardness, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide — the parameters most relevant to Southern Maryland well water. For bacteria, nitrates, and arsenic, we send samples to a certified laboratory.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
