Iron Bacteria in Toilet Tank — Southern Maryland Well Water Treatment

Iron Bacteria — Southern Maryland Well Water

Orange Slime in
Your Toilet Tank?

That orange, brown, or reddish slime is iron bacteria — a well water problem that won't go away on its own. Cleaning the toilet tank treats the symptom. We eliminate the source and prevent it from coming back.

What Is Iron Bacteria — and Why Is It in Your Toilet?

Iron bacteria are naturally occurring microorganisms that oxidize iron in groundwater to produce energy. They create a slimy biofilm — the orange, brown, or reddish slime you see in your toilet tank, on faucet aerators, and inside pipes. They are extremely common in Southern Maryland well water.

What it looks like

  • Orange, brown, or reddish-brown slime in toilet tank
  • Slimy buildup on toilet bowl rim and under the rim
  • Orange staining on sinks, tubs, and laundry
  • Slime on faucet aerators and showerheads
  • Clogged iron filters and water softeners
  • Musty or oily smell from the water

Why it keeps coming back

  • Iron bacteria live in the well and water system — not just the toilet
  • Cleaning the toilet removes the biofilm but not the source
  • Bacteria recolonize within days to weeks
  • Standard iron filters do not kill bacteria — they can actually harbor them
  • The only permanent fix is eliminating bacteria from the well and preventing recolonization
  • Shock chlorination alone is temporary — bacteria return without continuous disinfection

How We Eliminate Iron Bacteria — Permanently

1

Water Test & System Evaluation

We test your water for iron bacteria, iron concentration, pH, hardness, and other parameters. We also inspect the well, pressure tank, and any existing treatment equipment. Iron bacteria often foul water softeners and iron filters — we check for this.

2

Shock Chlorination

We introduce a high-concentration chlorine solution into the well and allow it to contact all surfaces — well casing, pump, drop pipe, pressure tank, and household plumbing. This kills the iron bacteria biofilm throughout the system. We flush the system thoroughly after treatment.

3

Permanent Disinfection System

Shock chlorination kills existing bacteria but does not prevent recolonization. We install a permanent disinfection system — either a chlorine injection system or UV disinfection — to continuously prevent bacteria from re-establishing in the water system.

4

Iron Filter Cleaning or Replacement

Iron bacteria frequently colonize iron filters and water softeners, fouling the media and reducing effectiveness. We clean or replace fouled media as part of the treatment process.

5

Follow-Up Water Test

We retest the water 2–4 weeks after treatment to confirm iron bacteria have been eliminated and the disinfection system is functioning correctly.

Iron Bacteria in Calvert & Anne Arundel County Wells

Iron bacteria are extremely common in Southern Maryland well water because the Aquia and Patuxent aquifers naturally produce high-iron water — exactly the conditions iron bacteria thrive in. Here's what we see in each area:

Calvert County (Dunkirk, Owings, Prince Frederick, Huntingtown)

Calvert County has some of the highest iron bacteria rates we see in the region. The Aquia aquifer produces iron at 3–15 ppm — ideal conditions for iron bacteria. We regularly find iron bacteria in wells that have never been shock-chlorinated, and in water softeners and iron filters that have been fouled by bacterial biofilm. Annual shock chlorination is recommended for Calvert County wells with known iron bacteria history.

Anne Arundel County (Davidsonville, Edgewater, Lothian, Churchton)

Anne Arundel County wells frequently have iron bacteria combined with low pH water. The acidic water (pH 5.8–6.5) creates a challenging treatment environment — chlorine is less effective at low pH. We address the pH first with an acid neutralizer, then treat the bacteria. UV disinfection is often preferred over chlorine injection in Anne Arundel County for this reason.

Chesapeake Beach & North Beach

Homes near the Bay with older wells frequently have iron bacteria combined with sulfur bacteria — a combination that produces both orange staining and sulfur odor. Treatment requires addressing both organisms simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the orange or brown slime in my toilet tank?
The orange, brown, or reddish-brown slime in your toilet tank is iron bacteria — a naturally occurring microorganism that feeds on iron in your well water. Iron bacteria are not a health hazard, but they produce a slimy biofilm that clogs pipes, fouls water treatment equipment, and causes persistent staining. They will not go away on their own.
Is iron bacteria dangerous to drink?
Iron bacteria are not considered a health hazard — they are not pathogenic. However, their presence indicates that your well may be susceptible to other bacterial contamination, including coliform bacteria. We recommend testing for coliform bacteria any time iron bacteria are present.
Why does the slime keep coming back after I clean the toilet?
Cleaning the toilet removes the biofilm but not the source. Iron bacteria live in the well and throughout the water system. They recolonize the toilet tank within days to weeks. The only permanent fix is eliminating bacteria from the well and installing a continuous disinfection system.
Will a water softener or iron filter remove iron bacteria?
No — standard iron filters and water softeners do not kill bacteria. In fact, iron bacteria frequently colonize the media in iron filters and water softeners, fouling the equipment and reducing its effectiveness. If you have iron bacteria, your treatment equipment needs to be cleaned or replaced as part of the treatment process.
How much does iron bacteria treatment cost?
Shock chlorination of the well and water system typically runs $300–$600. A UV disinfection system installed after the iron filter runs $800–$1,500. A chlorine injection system runs $1,500–$2,500. We give you a written estimate before any work begins.

"We had a mystery leak in our bathroom and everyone who saw it was convinced it was coming from inside the wall. He came out, checked everything, and was super thorough instead of just guessing. Turns out it was actually a leak from the toilet tank that was dripping in a way that made it look like it was coming from the opposite wall. He was super patient with all of our questions and explained the fix. We really appreciated his professionalism and transparency. Having an older home, it can be stressful not knowing what kind of repair you're walking into. I highly recommend him if you want someone trustworthy and knowledgeable who genuinely just wants to help."

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
