Mixing Valve Installation
Consistent Hot Water Temperature. Scald Protection. Legionella Safety.
A thermostatic mixing valve is one of the most important — and most overlooked — safety components in a plumbing system. It allows your water heater to run at the temperature needed to kill Legionella while delivering safe, consistent hot water at every fixture. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland installs whole-house and point-of-use mixing valves for residential and commercial properties throughout Calvert County and Anne Arundel County.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Mixing Valve?
Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV)
Blends hot and cold water to a preset temperature. Maintains that temperature regardless of pressure or temperature changes at the water heater. Required in healthcare and elder care facilities. Recommended for homes with children or elderly residents.
Pressure-Balancing Valve
Maintains a constant ratio of hot to cold water when pressure changes — like when a toilet flushes. Prevents scalding from sudden cold pressure drops. Required by code in new shower installations in Maryland.
Anti-Scald Valve
Set to limit the maximum temperature at a specific fixture. Simpler than a full TMV. Used at individual sinks, showers, or tubs where a whole-house valve is not installed.
Warning Signs You Need a Mixing Valve
These symptoms indicate inadequate temperature control — a safety risk for your household.
Shower temperature changes dramatically when a toilet is flushed — pressure-balancing valve needed
Hot water that's dangerously hot at some fixtures — water heater set too high without a mixing valve
Inconsistent shower temperature despite a consistent water heater setting
Mixing valve that's over 10 years old — internal components wear and temperature drift occurs
Shower that runs cold even with the water heater set high — mixing valve may be stuck
Scalding water at the bathroom sink — no anti-scald protection at the fixture
Temperature fluctuations throughout the day — pressure or temperature changes at the heater
Mixing valve that leaks at the body — valve failure, replacement needed
Why Mixing Valves Matter — Scalding & Legionella Safety
140°F
Causes third-degree burns in 5 seconds. Kills Legionella bacteria. Recommended water heater storage temperature.
120°F
Causes burns in 5 minutes. Safe for most adults. Recommended delivery temperature at fixtures.
110°F
Recommended maximum at fixtures for homes with children or elderly residents. Set by the mixing valve.
Water heater temperature is a genuine safety dilemma. Set it too low and you risk Legionella bacteria growth. Set it too high and you risk scalding at fixtures. A thermostatic mixing valve resolves both concerns simultaneously.
Legionella pneumophila — the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease — thrives in water between 77°F and 113°F. It is killed at 140°F. The CDC and ASHRAE recommend storing domestic hot water at 140°F. However, 140°F water causes third-degree burns in just 5 seconds — dangerously hot for showers, baths, and handwashing, especially for children and elderly individuals.
The solution: store water at 140°F in the water heater (killing Legionella) and install a thermostatic mixing valve at the outlet that blends the 140°F water with cold water to deliver a safe 110–120°F at all fixtures. Maryland code requires anti-scald protection in new construction. We recommend it for all homes.

What Our Customers Say

"We recently had Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland out to our home in Annapolis after we suddenly started noticing sewer flies throughout the house. They truly lived up to their name and performed a full "deep dive" diagnostic inspection instead of just treating the symptom. During their inspection they discovered our sewer pipe connected to the toilet had been leaking into the basement for quite some time. The team explained everything clearly, provided upfront pricing before starting any work, and even gave us a military discount which was greatly appreciated. They were professional, respectful, extremely knowledgeable, and took the time to make sure the repair was done correctly."

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had a mystery leak in our bathroom and everyone who saw it was convinced it was coming from inside the wall. He came out, checked everything, and was super thorough instead of just guessing. Turns out it was actually a leak from the toilet tank that was dripping in a way that made it look like it was coming from the opposite wall. He was super patient with all of our questions and explained the fix. We really appreciated his professionalism and transparency. Having an older home, it can be stressful not knowing what kind of repair you're walking into. I highly recommend him if you want someone trustworthy and knowledgeable who genuinely just wants to help."
