The Complete Well Water Treatment Guide for Maryland Homeowners
How to design a whole-house water treatment system in the correct order of operation — iron, hardness, pH, bacteria, and sediment. Get it wrong and the system fails. Get it right and it lasts 20 years.
Why Order of Operation Matters
The single most important concept in water treatment system design is order of operation. Install components in the wrong sequence and the system will fail — not eventually, but immediately or within months.
Here is why the order is non-negotiable:
- Acid neutralizer before iron filter: Iron oxidation requires pH above 6.8. Acidic water (common in Maryland) prevents the iron filter from working at all.
- Iron filter before softener: Even 0.3 ppm of iron coats softener resin beads and destroys their ion-exchange capacity within 1–3 years.
- Sediment filter before UV: Turbidity and iron particles scatter UV light, creating shadow zones where bacteria survive. UV installed in unfiltered water may provide zero disinfection.
- UV last: UV must be the final whole-house stage. Any contamination introduced downstream of UV (from a dirty filter housing, for example) bypasses disinfection entirely.
The Maryland Well Water Treatment Stack
A complete whole-house treatment system for Maryland well water — in the correct order of operation.
Sediment Pre-Filter (5–50 micron)
Removes sand, silt, and particulate debris. Protects every downstream component from physical damage and clogging.
Acid Neutralizer
Raises pH to 7.0+ before the iron filter. Iron will not oxidize at low pH — this stage is mandatory when pH is below 6.8.
Iron / Manganese Filter
Removes dissolved and particulate iron and manganese. Must come after pH correction and before the softener.
Water Softener
Removes calcium and magnesium hardness via ion exchange. Iron must be removed first — even 0.3 ppm fouls the resin.
Carbon Filter (if needed)
Removes chlorine, VOCs, taste, and odor. Required if city water is blended or if organic compounds are present.
UV Disinfection
Kills bacteria, viruses, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. Must be the last whole-house stage — all particulates must be removed first.
Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis
Final drinking water polish — removes nitrates, arsenic, sodium from softening, and any remaining dissolved solids.
Not Every Home Needs Every Stage
The seven-stage stack above represents a complete system for worst-case Maryland well water. Most homes need three to five stages. Your water test results determine which stages are required.
We perform a comprehensive on-site water test before recommending any system. See our water testing guide for what a proper test includes.
Common Treatment Mistakes
These are the most common — and costly — mistakes we see in Maryland well water treatment installations.
Softener Before Iron Filter
Iron fouls resin within 1–3 years, requiring expensive resin replacement. Always remove iron first.
UV Before Sediment Filter
Turbidity and iron block UV penetration. A UV system installed in unfiltered water may provide zero disinfection.
Skipping pH Correction
An iron filter installed in acidic water (pH < 6.8) will not oxidize dissolved iron. The iron passes through untreated.
Generic Packages Without Testing
Every well is different. A system designed for one home may be completely wrong for another. Test first, always.
Whole-House vs. Point-of-Use Treatment
Whole-House Treatment
Treats all water entering the home. Required for contaminants that damage plumbing and appliances — iron, hardness, pH, and sediment. Protects water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, and all fixtures.
Best for: iron, hardness, pH, sediment, bacteria
Point-of-Use Treatment
Treats water at a single tap. Appropriate for final drinking water polish — removing nitrates, arsenic, sodium added by softening, and any remaining dissolved solids. Does not protect plumbing or appliances.
Best for: nitrates, arsenic, taste, drinking water
Maintenance Requirements
A properly maintained treatment system lasts 15–20 years. Here is what each component requires.
