When to Call an Emergency Plumber (and When It Can Wait)
A plumbing emergency at 2 AM is stressful. Knowing which problems genuinely require an immediate call — and which can wait until morning — helps you make the right decision quickly and avoid unnecessary panic or unnecessary delay.
Call Immediately — These Are True Emergencies
These situations require an immediate call, any hour of the day or night. Waiting will cause significantly more damage or pose a health/safety risk.
Burst or Actively Leaking Pipe
A burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons per hour. Shut off the main water supply immediately, then call. Do not wait until morning.
Sewer Backup Into the Home
Sewage backing up into toilets, tubs, or floor drains is a health hazard and a sign of a main sewer line blockage or failure. Stop using all water in the home and call immediately.
No Water at All
If you have a well and suddenly have no water, the pump may have failed. This is an emergency — especially if you have no alternative water source.
Gas Leak
If you smell gas, leave the home immediately, don't use any switches or phones inside, and call 911 first, then your gas company. A licensed gas fitter (like Terry Foster Jr., MD Gas Fitter #98433) handles the repair after the gas company secures the line.
Sewage Smell Inside the Home
A persistent sewer gas smell indoors indicates a failed trap, cracked sewer line, or venting problem. Sewer gas contains methane and hydrogen sulfide — both toxic and potentially explosive.
Flooding from a Plumbing Fixture
An overflowing toilet, burst supply line, or failed washing machine hose can flood a room quickly. Shut off the supply valve to the fixture if possible, then call.
Water Heater Leaking or Making Loud Noises
A leaking water heater tank can fail catastrophically. Loud rumbling or popping indicates severe scale buildup and potential overheating. Shut off the cold water supply to the heater and call.
Frozen Pipes
If pipes have frozen and you're not getting water, do not try to thaw them with an open flame. Call a plumber — thawing must be done carefully to avoid a burst pipe.

These problems are real and should be addressed promptly — but they don't require a middle-of-the-night call. Schedule a same-day or next-day appointment.

- Minor leak under a sink that you can contain with a bucket
What to Do While You Wait for a Plumber
Know Where Your Shutoffs Are
Before an emergency happens, locate your main water shutoff valve. For homes on well water, this is typically near the pressure tank in the basement or utility room. For homes on municipal water, it's usually near the water meter. Knowing where it is before you need it can save thousands of dollars in water damage.
Individual Fixture Shutoffs
Every toilet, sink, and appliance has a shutoff valve nearby. For a leaking toilet supply line, turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise. For a leaking sink supply line, turn the valves under the sink. This limits damage to one fixture without shutting off water to the whole house.
Document the Damage
Take photos and video before cleanup for insurance purposes. Don't throw away damaged materials until your insurance company has been notified.
Don't Use Chemical Drain Cleaners
If you have a sewer backup, do not pour chemical drain cleaners into the drain. They won't fix a main line blockage, and they create a caustic hazard for the plumber who has to work in that drain.
