Common Water Problems in Southern Maryland

Southern Maryland well water — drawn from the Aquia, Patuxent, and Magothy aquifers — commonly contains a combination of these issues. Each requires a specific treatment approach:

Iron (Ferrous & Ferric)

The most common complaint in Southern Maryland. Dissolved iron causes orange staining on sinks, tubs, laundry, and fixtures. Particulate iron causes rust-colored sediment. Treatment depends on the type and concentration of iron.

Hard Water (Calcium & Magnesium)

Hard water causes scale buildup on water heaters, dishwashers, and fixtures. Most Southern Maryland well water tests between 10–25 GPG. A properly sized water softener eliminates scale.

Low pH (Acidic Water)

Acidic water (pH below 7.0) corrodes copper pipes and causes blue-green staining on fixtures. An acid neutralizer raises pH to a safe range and stops corrosion.

Sulfur / Hydrogen Sulfide

The rotten egg smell in well water. Caused by sulfur bacteria or naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide gas. Treatment depends on the source — we test before recommending.

Iron Bacteria

Microorganisms that feed on iron in the water. Signs include orange slime in toilet tanks and a musty odor. Requires shock chlorination and specific filtration — not just a standard iron filter.

Sediment & Turbidity

Sand, silt, and particulate matter that clogs fixtures and damages appliances. A sediment pre-filter protects downstream treatment components and appliances.

Water Treatment Systems We Install

Iron Filters

Oxidizing iron filters remove dissolved and particulate iron from well water. We size the filter correctly for your iron concentration and flow rate. Must be installed before the water softener.

Water Softeners

Ion exchange water softeners remove calcium and magnesium hardness. We size the softener for your household's daily water usage and hardness level. Must be installed after the iron filter.

Acid Neutralizers

Calcite or calcite/corosex blend neutralizers raise pH to a safe range and stop copper pipe corrosion. Must be installed before the iron filter and softener.

UV Disinfection Systems

Ultraviolet light systems eliminate bacteria, viruses, and iron bacteria without chemicals. Installed after filtration to ensure the UV light can penetrate the water effectively.

Reverse Osmosis Systems

Point-of-use RO systems provide the highest quality drinking water — removing nitrates, arsenic, PFAS, and other contaminants that whole-house filters do not address.

Sediment Pre-Filters

Whole-house sediment filters protect downstream treatment components and appliances from sand, silt, and particulate matter. The first component in any treatment sequence.

Water Treatment — FAQ

What water treatment do I need in Maryland?
It depends on your water test results. Maryland well water commonly has iron, hardness, low pH, and sometimes sulfur or iron bacteria. We test your water on-site and design a treatment system based on your actual results — not a generic package.
How much does water treatment cost in Maryland?
A basic iron filter starts around $1,500–$2,500 installed. A full system (iron filter + softener + acid neutralizer) typically runs $3,500–$6,000 installed. We test your water first and give you a written estimate before any work begins.
What is the correct order for water treatment components?
The correct order is: sediment pre-filter → acid neutralizer (if needed) → iron filter → water softener → UV system (if needed) → carbon filter (if needed). Installing components in the wrong order causes them to fail prematurely.
Can I install a water softener without testing my water first?
You can, but you should not. Without a water test, you do not know your iron level. If your iron is above 3 ppm and you install a softener without an iron filter first, the iron will foul the resin and destroy the softener within months.
How long does water treatment system installation take?
A single component (iron filter or softener) typically takes 3–5 hours. A full multi-component system takes 6–10 hours. We schedule installations at your convenience and complete the work in one visit when possible.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
