Why Does My Well Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs? | Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland

Why Does My Well Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

The rotten egg smell is one of the most common complaints from well water homeowners in Southern Maryland. It's caused by hydrogen sulfide gas — but the source of that gas determines the right treatment. Here's how to diagnose it and fix it.

Three Sources of the Rotten Egg Smell

1. Naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide in the aquifer. Some aquifers in Southern Maryland contain naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide gas. The smell is present in all water — hot and cold — and is consistent year-round. Treatment: aeration or an oxidizing filter (iron/sulfur filter).

2. Sulfur-reducing bacteria in the well. Sulfur-reducing bacteria convert sulfate in the water to hydrogen sulfide. The smell may be intermittent or worse after the well hasn't been used. Treatment: shock chlorination followed by continuous disinfection.

3. Anode rod reaction in the water heater. This is the most common cause in Maryland. The magnesium anode rod in your water heater reacts with sulfate in the water to produce hydrogen sulfide. The smell is only in hot water, not cold. Treatment: replace the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc rod.

How to Diagnose the Source

Smell only in hot water?Anode rod reaction in water heater — replace anode rod
Smell in hot and cold water?Hydrogen sulfide in the water supply — test and treat at the source
Smell intermittent or worse after no use?Likely sulfur bacteria — test for bacteria and treat with chlorination
Smell consistent and year-round?Likely naturally occurring H2S in aquifer — aeration or oxidizing filter

The Maryland Well Water Context

In Calvert County and Anne Arundel County, the most common cause of rotten egg smell is the anode rod reaction — because the well water in this area has naturally high sulfate content. The fix is straightforward: replace the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc rod. This eliminates the smell without affecting water quality.

If the smell is in both hot and cold water, we test for hydrogen sulfide and sulfur bacteria before recommending treatment. The right treatment depends on the source — and treating the wrong source wastes money.

Savannah Foster

Southern Maryland

May 2026

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."

"We had our water heater leak and flood our basement. Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland came out Saturday morning and got us a new heater same day for a very reasonable price, and also replaced the shutoff valve that was old and wouldn't stop dripping."
