What Is Hard Water? Signs, Causes & Solutions for Maryland Homeowners
Hard water is one of the most common water quality issues for Southern Maryland homeowners on private wells. It's not a health risk — but it's quietly damaging your plumbing, appliances, and water heater every day. Here's what it is, how to recognize it, and what to do about it.
What Makes Water "Hard"?
Water hardness refers to the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals in the water. As groundwater moves through rock and soil, it dissolves these minerals — the more it dissolves, the harder the water.
Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L):
- Soft: 0–3.5 gpg (0–60 mg/L)
- Moderately hard: 3.5–7 gpg (60–120 mg/L)
- Hard: 7–10.5 gpg (120–180 mg/L)
- Very hard: Over 10.5 gpg (180+ mg/L)
Southern Maryland well water commonly tests at 8–15 gpg — firmly in the hard to very hard range.
Signs You Have Hard Water
- White or gray scale deposits on faucets, showerheads, and around drains — this is calcium carbonate precipitating out of the water as it evaporates.
- Soap scum on shower walls and tubs — hard water reacts with soap to form an insoluble curd instead of lathering.
- Spots on dishes and glassware after washing — mineral deposits left behind as water dries.
- Reduced water pressure over time — scale accumulates inside pipes, reducing the interior diameter.
- Stiff, scratchy laundry — minerals deposit in fabric fibers.
- Skin and hair dryness — hard water leaves a mineral film on skin and hair.
- Frequent water heater problems — scale accumulates on the heating element and inside the tank, reducing efficiency and shortening lifespan.
What Hard Water Does to Your Plumbing and Appliances
The visible signs are annoying — the invisible damage is expensive. Hard water scale accumulates inside:
- Water heater: Scale insulates the heating element, forcing it to work harder and longer. A heavily scaled water heater uses 25–40% more energy and fails years earlier than it should.
- Pipes: Scale builds up on pipe walls over years, reducing flow and eventually causing blockages — particularly in older galvanized steel pipes.
- Dishwasher and washing machine: Scale damages heating elements, pumps, and seals. Hard water is a leading cause of premature appliance failure.
- Tankless water heater: The narrow heat exchanger passages scale up rapidly in hard water, causing overheating and failure. A tankless unit on untreated hard water can fail in 3–5 years.
The Solution: Water Softener
A water softener removes calcium and magnesium through a process called ion exchange. Water flows through a resin bed charged with sodium ions. The calcium and magnesium ions in the water swap places with the sodium ions — the minerals are captured in the resin, and softened water flows out.
The resin regenerates periodically by flushing with a salt solution, releasing the captured minerals down the drain and recharging the resin with sodium.
Softened water:
- Eliminates scale buildup in pipes and appliances
- Extends water heater life by 5–8 years
- Reduces soap and detergent usage by 50–75%
- Eliminates spots on dishes and fixtures
- Protects tankless water heaters from scale failure
Important: Soften After Iron Removal
If your water also has iron (common in Southern Maryland), the iron filter must be installed before the water softener. Iron fouls the softener resin — even small amounts of iron will coat the resin beads and reduce softening capacity over time. The correct sequence is: acid neutralizer → iron filter → water softener.
Get Your Water Tested First
Before buying any equipment, test your water. A water softener is sized based on your hardness level and household water usage — an undersized softener won't protect your plumbing, and an oversized one wastes salt. We test water on-site and size equipment correctly for your specific situation.

"Absolutely blown away by the service from Deep Dive Plumbing Maryland! We had ongoing issues with our well water for years — bad smell, staining, and constant problems with pressure — and nobody ever took the time to truly figure out the root cause. Terry and the team came out, performed a full water analysis, explained everything in detail, and designed a system specifically for our home instead of just trying to sell us random equipment. You can really tell they care about doing things the right way. The install was extremely clean and professional, they walked us through how everything works, and our water has never looked or tasted better. The difference is unbelievable."
